Downtime and Updates

In December we suffered some downtime on the website. This has now been fixed and the specific problem won't be happening again.

In light of that, updates are coming. I'm currently assembling all the updates I had for December and they will appear shortly.

Several new parishes can be found on the list. Including St. Simon in Oakville and St. James in Morrisburg - both in Ontario.

The Easter PBSC newsletter is available.

Also the Saskatoon branch has, per the usual, made the latest editions of their newsletter available, October and November.

The website has recently suffered some outages. Do to situations out of control with the hosting company. Service is back to normal at this time.

A new board of directors has taken office in the Greater Niagara Branch of the Prayer Book Society of Canada in April. Headed by the new President Alex Urquhart O.N. of Saint Paul’s Dunnville the slate consists entirely of young men from the ages of sixteen to twenty nine representing churches from all over the Diocese of Niagara.

Mr. Urquhart who is the youngest Order of Niagara recipient, the head server at St Paul’s and a St Michael’s Youth Conference of Ontario member will be also representing the Society at Lambeth 2008 in July.

The TACTUS Vocal Ensemble will be offering a performance of William Byrd's Great Service. A setting composed for performance on the highest holy days in the Chapel Royal of Queen Elizabeth I. This setting of canticles for the services of Morning and Evening Prayer is the most elaborate of its time. Strangely, and sadly, the monumental scope of The Great Service has led to its neglect. This masterpiece is rarely performed in liturgical or concert settings.

Tactus Vocal Ensemble has long desired to present it, but the massive form offered challenges. Written for two choirs of five voices, The Great Service demands that that TACTUS expand its forces. Music Director Catherine Robertson will conduct. Byrd anthems will also be sung. Organist Michael Bloss will feature some of the intriguing keyboard works of Byrd, who was without question the greatest of a remarkable group of English Renaissance composers. This is a unique chance to experience a rare and important work of church music.

(This concert is not endorsed in by the Prayer Book Society of Canada but presented as an event of general interest to it's members.)

TACTUS presents The Great Service on Saturday, February 23 2008 at 8:00p.m at Church of Our Lady in Guelph.

Tickets are available through the River Run Centre box office: 519-763-3000/877-520-2408 or riverrun.ca/tickets.
The cost is $20 adults and $10 students. Tickets will also be available at the door.

New Cathedral for the Arctic Diocese

A service for the groundbreaking and founding of the new St. Jude’s Cathedral will take place on Sunday, June 3rd at 11:00am. Attending will be the Premier of Nunavut, the Bishop of the Diocese of the Arctic, and members of the Cathedral congregation as well as members of the congregation of St. Simon’s Church, Apex. The Greater Niagara Branch reports that on September 8th, 2007 they will be hosting The Prayer Book Society of Canada’s Ontario Branches Meeting in the Parish hall of St. Luke's, Hamilton, following a luncheon at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club.
